#010 Even Atheists Obey (Psalm 14:1)
Psalm 14 begins with a very plain and unambiguous statement:
‘The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”’
Atheism, according to the Psalmist, is foolishness.
Why? Well, as the Psalm continues: ‘They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.’
Meaning, they are disobedient. They don’t believe in God, so they see no need to obey him.
And, of course, that is evidently true. The less a person or society acknowledges God, the more disobedient it becomes.
The thing is, in what I consider an amusing twist of providential irony, even God denying fools can’t help but obey God in some areas of life.
So total is God's kingly rule, that even if you pay no regard to him at all, even if you refuse to believe that he exists, you are subject to him.
For instance, even the most hardened atheist obeys God when he breathes God's air in order to put oxygen in his body to keep himself alive, just the way God designed him to.
Atheist, whether you like it or not, you inevitably exalt God, even in a small way, by every unavoidable act of obedience to God’s natural and moral laws that you are subject to. And in doing so, whether you recognise it or not, you demonstrate your subordination to him as your ruler, your king.
What do we read in Romans 14?
‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’
Every fool, every so-called atheist, will one day acknowledge God and even bow down before him. Why not acknowledge him before it’s too late?
He’d be pleased if you did.
